DAVID JOHNSTONE
DAVID JOHNSTONE

Founder and editor of seminal Chelsea fanzine cfcuk which began life as Matthew Harding’s Blue and White Army, David Johnstone has been a true champion of Blues’ supporters causes for several decades. Never shy of locking horns with former Stamford Bridge supremo Ken Bates, David took the then Chelsea owner to task over many issues, suing him for libel in 2002 when he described the Chelsea Independent Supporters Association as parasites. (Bates eventually settled out of court.)

A despised by-product of Bates-era Chelsea was the redesigned club crest and David was instrumental in taking the cfcuk-led campaign for the restoration of the traditional lion rampant regardant to the door of new owner Roman Abramovich.

Quite how David has managed to keep the cost of cfcuk to £1 all these years remains a mystery, but he is determined that despite rising production costs it will remain thereby avoiding the need to change his “Hurry up, it’s only a pound” sales pitch that is often imitated -- but never bettered -- by those he encounters following Chelsea over land and sea (and Leicester).

In addition to ensuring cfcuk hits the street every month during the football season, David has also collaborated on several Chelsea titles with Mark and Kelvin as well as authoring his debut novel Ultraviolet a Glastonbury tale under the pseudonym Blueblagger.

Away from writing, David is a talented musician who has released many Chelsea-themed tracks as Billy Bluebeat through Cherry Red Records. Stints as a DJ and professional roadie for bands such as Sham 69 and The Cure have furthered his involvement in London’s underground alternative punk and indie scene and he currently assists at the Human Punk nights held at London’s legendary 100 Club.
